چکیده

SUMMARY Front-end modules in current cochlear implant devices make use of parallel banks of independent bandpass filters. Compared to the earlier front-end modules implementing formant extraction, filter banks dissipate less power and have superior performance. To further improve the performance of such front-end modules, we propose a front-end module, which consists of a cascade of adaptive second-order filters, models of inner hair cells, and spectral feature-detection circuits. Compared to the existing front-end modules, the proposed front end reduces power dissipation by a factor of 20-100 because the MOS transistors in its circuits are operated in weak inversion. In addition, the module mimics aspects of the biological cochlea like broadening of place information with intensity, gain control, and sharp frequency roll-off slopes. The module can provide the phase information that is necessary for implementing phase-based coding strategies.

A 16-channel Analog VLSI Processor for Bionic Ears and Speech-Recognition Front Ends

We describe a 470pW 16-channel analog VLSI processor for bionic ears (cochlear implants) and portable speechrecognition front ends. The power consumption of the processor is kept at low levels through the use of subthreshold CMOS technology. Each channel is composed of a programmable bandpass filter, an envelope detector, and a logarithmic dual-slope analog-to-digital converter that currently o...

A New Analog-based LO Harmonic Rejection Technique with Tunable Notch Frequency

An effective technique for mixer LO harmonic rejection in a SAW-less wideband receiver front-end is proposed. The proposed technique provides a tunable notch that can be placed at any frequency like mixer LO harmonics, to avoid the aliasing in baseband after mixing. An analog LC notch is used in a cascode transconductor, and it can reject one of the 3rd or 5th harmonics. T...

A Low-Power Wide-Dynamic-Range Analog VLSI Cochlea

Low-power wide-dynamic-range systems are extremely hard to build. The biological cochlea is one of the most awesome examples of such a system: It can sense sounds over 12 orders of magnitude in intensity, with an estimated power dissipation of only a few tens of microwatts. In this paper, we describe an analog electronic cochlea that processes sounds over 6 orders of magnitude in intensity, and...

Low Noise Front-End Amplifier Dedicated to Monitor Very Low Amplitude Signal from Implantable Sensors

This paper describes a low-noise, low-power and lowvoltage analog front-end amplifier integrated in implantable electronic devices and dedicated to very low amplitude signal acquisition. Low noise and low DC offset are obtained by means of Chopper Stabilization (CHS) technique. In addition, due to adding a rail to rail input stage, low power supply (1.8V) and wide common mode input range (0-1.8...
